Solo female driving in Yucatan/Mexico?
About to spend almost 2 weeks in Mexico around the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo - and I'm realizing that my arrival into Mexico around New Year's Eve is offering very limited bus service schedules (from Cancun to Piste or Valladolid), in which I may not catch in time due to customs, and all that..
A lot of suggestions have mentioned getting your own car rental to manage your own itinerary and such, but any thoughts or experience doing this as a solo female? If there was anything I was warned about during my last trip it was driving alone as it would be noticeable I'd be a solo female and such to the police, and who knows who else. I would obviously exercise common sense in driving on the main highways, and try to drive mostly during the day, but I don't think that will always happen with the sun going down around 5PM this time of year. I also can't drive stick shift/manual, so if there isn't anything automatic, that would be out of the question (I also saw that potentially as a limited offering as well).
Thanks for any info!
FYI - this is my 2nd time in Mexico (primarily Quintana Roo (PDC and Tulum) last time) and I was pretty comfortable navigating around via bus, collectivo, taxi etc alone and I speak (somehow) enough convincing Spanish to negotiate a little and get information.
