Teaching the Declaration of Independence

I teach an 8th Grade US History course in North Carolina, and we are just at the beginning of the American Revolution. I'm trying to figure out a way to not just teach them about the Declaration of Independence, but to do it in an engaging way. Last year (my first year of teaching) we simply read it out of the textbook, and it was one of the worst lessons I did. Any help would be appreciated!!
