Christmas and anniversary gifts for a boyfriend?

Hi everyone! I have my one-year anniversary with my boyfriend coming up a few days before Christmas, and we're buying each other gifts for both occasions. I'm totally stumped what to get him, though! We're both going to be home in the US for the holiday so we'll be seeing each other, but we currently both are studying in different countries in Europe. I don't want to get him anything that's going to be a hassle to bring on a transatlantic flight, but I also don't want to get him something boring (he suggested socks...) or time consuming (he loves books but has no time right now for pleasure reading). And I'd like to do something more romantic for our anniversary. Does anyone have any suggestions or gifts you've given in the past that have gone over well?
