Need help planning a trip for Northern Lights, February 2017.

Question

Hey guys.

So usually I travel solo and I'm more than happy planning my own trips, but now I'm planning to do a Northern Lights trip with a +1 and it seems so overly-commerical on google searches and travel agencies that I can't find any way of designing the trip myself on a budget, and I don't want to pay £1000 for 5 nights in Iceland.

So first and foremost I'm looking for anyone that has planned a Northern Lights Watching trip in recent years.

Intended trip duration would be up to 7 nights. Is this usually enough to try see some lights? As for destination, as long as it's Europe we're okay with any of the normal locations, Iceland, Finland, etc. I heard a few people hunt from Canada but that seems a bit far for us.

For prices I'd like to keep it as basic as possible, flying from any UK airport to the destination, renting something basic like a log cabin and a snow mobile and just entertaining ourselves for a few nights? Both 20+, and working. Ideal time to travel would be during the first 2 weeks of February.

Hopefully someone a bit more internet savvy and knows the market a bit more can help! Thanks guys!
