GS500 cranks but won't start after running out of gas.

Hi guys, I recently bought a GS500 as a starter bike, unfortunately, through a series of unfortunate events, I haven't been able to ride it more than a couple minutes. I'm not a super good mechanic, and what's worse, it's dark by the time I get off work so it's hard to find the time to work on the bike.

I recently took delivery of the bike (so obviously it ran then) from a friend who parked it in my apartment parking lot. Before he left, he, not being used to a vacuum petcock (he rides an old BMW) advised me to turn the fuel off if I wasn't riding the bike. Good advice, but he turned it to prime. The next day I left on a four day trip. When I returned, all the gas I assume had flowed out of the bike while I was gone and the tank was now empty.

I heard that this could be pretty bad, since the gas could now be in the oil or the cylinders and cause hydrolock. I checked the dipstick and the oil level wasn't noticably higher, and I didn't get a very distinct smell of gas from the dipstick or the opening. As far as hydrolock goes, I (probably stupidly) decided to just cross my fingers and risk it.

I put the battery on a tender, charged it up, then took it off while I waited to pick up a gas can on my next shopping trip. About a week and a half later I got the can, got some gas, hooked up the battery, poured in the gas, and turned the petcock to prime again. I gave it a minute or so and tried to start the bike. It would crank, but it wouldn't actually start. Any help or advice before I get it towed to a shop?

I do know it's not the kill switch or the side stand being down, but I'm at a loss for anything else.
