[SPOILER] Anyone know what happens if you never get dogmeat as companion in this scenario?

Specifically, when you get Nick Valentine to help you find Kellog. Dogmeat plays a very critical role in the quest Reunions. Does the game force you to find dogmeat to help or does it play out another way? I could find out on my own by rolling another character, just wondering if anyone else has already done it.
