1 week-old hatchlings died.
And I have no idea why. Peeked into their little next this morning and it was covered in ants devouring the tiny corpses. I am so sad. I know this happens and I am pretty sure mama bird has had babies before (second nest in same area), and just last night I saw her sitting on them.
I used to worry as while I am in warm Mexico (outside Guad) the nights get cool and oftentimes I'd see the nest without her in the evenings for up to 20 minutes at a time. Did they freeze to death?
I don't know a thing about hummingbirds. Just sad and curious as to what likely happened, if anyone has ideas.
Edit: Also had sugar-water right next to her nest that she frequently visited throughout the day. Now, no sign of her. Maybe a predator got her or she is off doing new things.
