Considering the lack of any cultural connection, how did contemporary soldiers and civilians react to the Zouave uniforms of the American Civil War?

When compared to contemporary uniforms of regular infantry the uniforms of the Zouave regiments - seeing as the US had no cultural or colonial links to North Africa - seem bizarre. Adopting another nation's military customs is commonplace, but as this change is purely cosmetic, how did people react to certain groups of soldiers suddenly taking to wearing baggy pantaloons, tightly-fitted tunics, and turbans?
