Even the mantises recognized the worthlessness of this experiment when they pointed out Avatar is just a remake of Dances With Wolves.
Later the mantises were also recorded expressing dissatisfaction that, quote, "Now every fucking movie is going to tack on this gimmicky bullshit to try and make more money, sacrificing visual effects quality that could have been used in other places."

I'm not sure. I hadn't thought about it until I saw your post. I barely remember Dances With Wolves, but what I do remember I think you're right.
The trope of "guy sent to interrogate/oppress locals goes native" seems reasonably common, though.
