It's the same games that were found in the Humble NeoGeo 25th Anniversary Bundle from around a month ago. If you bought the highest tier of the bundle already, there is nothing new for you here.

Kinda. DotEmu (the porting company) bought the rights to the old GameTap emulator Nebula. Someone decompiled one of the games in the bundle, saw that it was using Nebula code, and kicked up some dust over that fact. DotEmu clarified that yes, they were using Nebula for these games, as they had purchased the rights to Nebula.

Foxhack•

as they had purchased the rights to Nebula

... they purchased the rights to Gametap's emulation software, which was a stripped down version of Nebula without the emulation cores it normally used.

So DotEmu's emulator is outdated as hell and who knows where the cores even came from.

hellafunOP•

Interesting. Do you have more information? I'll be honest, I don't know what an emulation core is.

Edit: Also, the latest version of nebula was released in 2007, GameTap went out of business two years later in 2009. There's a pretty decent chance the GameTap version and the freeware version are identical. Do you have any specific information about the GameTap/DotEmu version being outdated?

keep in mind this is my personal experience, but I found these games to have frame rate issues and they work on my 64 bit system but not the 32 bit. YMMV.

Some of the games have slowdown even when played on the original Neo Geo hardware, especially the Metal Slug games.

Patienceisavirtue1•

True, but I'd like to think that my system is a little more powerful than a Neo Geo. If that makes a difference.

Is this deal worse then the original bundle? What was the cost of the full bundle.

5
hellafunOP•

Yeah, the bundle was a MUCH better deal. The top tier was $10, and it got you everything found in the NeoGeo Classics Complete Collection. It also included Steam keys for two games that are not emulated/Steam only: The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition, and The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match.

Interesting tidbit for those who missed this when these games were in a bundle recently:

These are just the game roms and Neo-Geo bios shipped with a bare-bones emulator. The roms can be found as zips in the install folder. You can drop them into MAME and they'll work, no need to extract or rename anything.

Some might find this lazy or pointless, but I for one find it fantastic that you can legally buy the original roms rather than having to put up with mediocre ports.

hellafunOP•

I agree with you! That is actually what excited me most about the bundle. Who cares about the crap emulation wrapper it comes with? SNK just sold us legal arcade roms for some of my favorite arcade games. :D

Only the Metal Slugs are Steam.

VeryApe121•

Is metal slug 2 steam? I dont see it listed in the steam store.

3
cedear•

You can hover over a title to see DRM. You're right that Metal Slug 2 is not Steam.

2
DurianNinja•

Metal Slug X is a reworked version of 2 which fixes the slowdown and changes some things around (such as a day level is now night instead)

Hope they keep on bringing many more SNK Arcade classics out. Would love to see Puzzle de Pon and Money Exchanger Idol.

Are there any games on sale which were not included in the Neo Geo Humble Bundle?

4
PossesseDCoW•

No, there aren't. This sale is actually missing King of Fighters 98 and King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match.

RainerMD•

okay, thanks

Seems like they're starting to move their bundles to the store now... I better liked this as the Tuesday bundle we didn't get this time.

3
literallygenius•

at this rate it'll be an encore rebundle in no time!

4
Kashorne•

I remember some great bundles. I wish more game devs would allow Humble to bundle their games. People will check their site less often if the same bundles keep coming up.

cryofthespacemutant•

We might possibly see an end to the weekly bundles if indeed they are having problems getting developers to include their games. One wonders why Bundlestars has had so much success though. Perhaps they offer them a larger cut of the bundle returns.

Why can't we purchase the soundtrack?

I couldn't get it during the bundle cuz of Christmas and all. Now with a bit of extra money I want to get it. Sadly I did not find it.

2
Truffle_Shuffle_85•

Metal Slug X Steam code for $4 seems like a good deal, ya?

Edit: downvotes for an honest question, must have rubbed someone's butthole the wrong way.

2†
Foxhack•

It's been cheaper before. Also, um, the port really sucks. It's a phone to PC port.

5
Truffle_Shuffle_85•

Gotcha, what is the recommended best way to play it?

2
Foxhack•

Probably one of the console ports.

I'm just saying, if you really want it, buy it during a sale on Steam. If it works well for you - then keep it. But if it runs like crap, then you have the option to request a refund on Steam itself. You can't do that with Humble.

ProgenitorX•

Metal Slug bundle was $3.99 during Winter Sale (1, 3, X). I'd wait.

I read this as NatGeo sale , and was puzzled yet excited they had those first person shooters set in historical battles. Then I saw it says NeoGeo... and then I remembered those games were funded by History chanel and not NatGeo. After that I started to question my sanity, because why would you think Nat Geo makes FPS?

1
DurianNinja•

I kinda wish they would port some of their Atomiswave games to PC. They're probably the least played games by SNK Playmore.
