LI's in MEA

I posted a few days back about people's preferred squad makeup for Andromeda and now I kind of want to ask the same thing about romances. What do we want in our love interests? Do we really want to butt heads and maybe other things with a krogan or get all flirty with an elcor? (Seductive: I would like to be with you). Do you want sweet romances, sexy ones or even antagonistic ones? Let me know what your ideal LI's for Andromeda are.

As long as I can romance an Asari, it's all good haha. But some tweaks to the system would be nice. Now that the galaxy isn't being taken over by ancient galaxy murdering aliens, maybe you can take some time to actually do things like you did with Garrus and shooting the bottles

Zlojeb•

Definitely more scenes with LI. And I don't mean sex scenes(although those would be nice, the "omg we're all gonna die let's fuck before the last mission" is boring and getting old), like let us do something outside talks at the spot where LI is chilling.

Although I didn't like any of the characters that were potential romances in DA: Inquisition, I really enjoyed how thoughtful the scenes were with them and the effort put into it

9
The_Dwalks•

Yes, DA:I was a good step forward and I hope they draw more from it

7
JesterMarcus•

I agree. I picked one just to pick one but I thought the amount of scenes you can have with them was cool and felt more natural.

shinarit•

I want a LI who actually pursues the romance themselves, not just let them being woo'd by the protagonist. A proactive romancer.

But otherwise on one hand I would love to have a Quarian girl, on the other that would be either too much like Tali or I wouldn't like her, so probably best not to have that.

Would be nice to have actually interesting human LIs, have a female Turian, maybe flesh out the Drell some more. Also a Volus hugging/cuddling buddy would be nice, they are so teddy-bearish!

42
GildasMagnus•

Yes! Having your companions come to talk to You as you wander the ship, especially having them come specifically to flirt, would be brilliant. ME3 at least had "Come see me" emails, but I'd like to be surprised in a corridor, damnit.

CraftingCK•

Tali was honestly the reason that I cared if Shepard lived or died, I hope they can replicated that with whatever romances they have in the next game.

Example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br10LrGiVgo

Quas4r•

I want a LI who actually pursues the romance themselves

Actually I think ME3 kind of already had that, even if it wasn't really done right. Romanceable squadmembers all just throw themselves at you even if you did nothing to warrant it in the previous games. They even turned Kaidan gay out of nowhere just for the sake of having a gay guy squadmember, since they already had lesbians...
I wish they would have made it so only your last LI behaved this way, and you would have had to initiate things if you wanted to go with someone else.

6
ashlilyart•

Kaiden was supposed to be bi in ME1. All the lines for it are recorded and in the final product IIRC, just not accessible normally. So they made him bi in ME3.

He was never gay.

11
HammletHST•

According to the Wiki, Meer and Hale had to each record both romance dialogues in order to get around a programming issue, and even when you mod your gender (to romance Ash as FemShep or Kaidan as BroShep), you will still be referred to as the other sexes' Shepard, indicating that the VO for Kaidan and Ash only recorded the dialogue for their respective romance

9
nocbl2•

Fuck I cant find it, but there's a hilarious recording of meer going "so you want a relationship? Even though we're both women?"

6
shinarit•

I never felt this. When romancing for example Tali, I never felt Liara or Ashley pushing herself on me. Not even Cortez.

5
Altair_ShepardN7•

The only one I can really think of is Diana Allers, who throws some awkward lines after each interview.

7
Quas4r•

You may not remember it, but at some point (for example when they ask you to meet during shore leave) several squadmembers have dialogue that goes like "Have you ever thought that you and I..." to more or less subtly hint that they're interested in you. I think all you need for that to happen is to not be an asshole with them during dialogue. At that point you have to turn them down clearly and they won't ask again.

googlyman•

Some more morally ambiguous LIs' for us Renegades. Think of a relationship that doesn't start with a "I like you!" and instead goes the "Lets be fuckbuddies." route. If you don't romance someone else until a good part into the game the relationship could develop and become slightly more serious. But not to much. If they make sequels with the same protagonist you could continue the romance to become an actual 'romance' in the second game.

Someone that doesn't cry you a river the moment you get a cutscene like Miranda and Jack, but instead stays resolute. Someone who's tough and does what needs to be done when it needs to be done, without Garrus' vigilate streak, but still remains 'human' (or what ever). And no Daddy Issues! Any reason for feeling bad should be because of their actions.

They could of course be of any race but c'mon, Asari for the win...

23
Zlojeb•

And no Daddy Issues!

Agreed

13
PainInTheAss12•

So you basically want morrigan from DA.

8
googlyman•

...Shit.
I didn't even realize that. But then again it was 6 years ago so we're good for another one right?

2
N0wh3re_Man•

Well, she may not have daddy issues per se...

Definitely want more romance scenes that aren't sex scenes. One of the reasons why I like romancing Garrus is the lack of sex scenes, I'd like to see more like this, or even just having more "date scenes" too.

Character-wise, speaking from a female character point of view, I would like to see a male Quarian (similar to Kal'Reegar, confident soldier kinda guy) or a male Batarian that ends up having a love/hate relationship with the main character due to them being human, but slowly warming up. I'd really like a romanceable Krogan too and maybe even a more male, assertive, pushy Asari character this time around, like a younger Aethyta. I'm curious to see new races in Andromeda too! :)

Honestly, I won't know what I'm looking for until I find it in MEA. I can't wait to meet the new squad and get to know these people as well as I know Shep's crew. MEA's release is so far away... T.T

14
EllairaJayd•

It's closer now than it was last year! :D

4
elephantiness•

Yes, definitely! I find myself agreeing with most of the things you've written. A male quarian and batarian was EXACTLY what I was thinking too! Would love to see the dynamics of a love/hate relationship with the batarian.

1
Cat-magic•

Hanar!

But really, I hope they add a few new races into the romance mix. The characters trying to figure out how to go about it was hilarious.

11
Jimmy_TableOP•

Yeah, as were Mordin's comments on them too

11
Ratchet1332•

I hope that whatever new races there are will have a love interest available, even if it is just one of them. But other than that, I need a female Drell, a Krogan, and, to make things interesting, a Batarian.

EDIT: I'm also hoping they don't restrict the sexuality as much. FemShep kinda got the shaft (pun definitely intended) with love interests. One dies and one leaves you. And then there's Kaidan.

9
ScarletRhi•

At least there's Garrus

10
Ratchet1332•

Garrus and Liara are my favorites. I'd like Thane more but...y'know. Only so many cut onions I can take in a playthrough.

8
JamesKam•

I hope we have one that has a larger effect on the main story, rather than some unique dialogue every now and again. But no loyalty missions ffs, those pissed me off so bad.

8
templar_•

In an ideal game we would have an option for all higher evolved, organics and suitable synthetics of all orientations with a variety of original personalities.

But that would be a lot of characters so I'd settle for a nice Turian woman. Or Morrigan, Morrigan would be good.

6
Logseman•

You mean Admiral Xen?

1
Allanlemos•

I want the LI's to react to our actions in game,as opposed to the current romance system where they are pretty much indifferent. For exemple, let's say that Liara is your LI,and you chose the Geth over the Quarians, that would cause Tali's suicide, then Liara could say something like "How could you do that to Tali? She was my friend.".It would make things much more interesting as you would have to find a way to get her to forgive you,if you want to further the romance. To sum up,I want the LIs to be able to confront you about past actions.

3
Zlojeb•

That might be okay, but one thing I dislike about DA is the "Dude disliked that".

First time when I played DA games I was so pissed. Well excuuuuse me mister, I didn't know you would object to that(except the obvious choices). I am so glad that wasn't in ME.

1
Logseman•

DAI kinda went out of the way to highlight who liked what though. For example, Sera hates magic with a passion and Solas is all about freeing the mages. If you are supporting or understanding about magic you know you'll piss off Sera and make Solas happy.

1
ponks•

As freaky as possible with the races, as far as I'm concerned. I'd love for a Turian woman to be an option for an MC of either gender to pursue, but I'm not optimistic about that happening -- I expect that either BioWare or EA would worry about scaring off potential customers with a female romance option that doesn't have the silhouette of a standard Hollywood actress. But maybe I underestimate BioWare here (or the appeal of dat Turian figure).

I also hope they manage to get deeper with the relationships than they have already, although I wouldn't be disappointed with relationships the depth of those in ME2/3. What I hope not to see is what we got in DA:I, where the structure for at least one character was: one initiating conversation, one "get flowers" quest, sex scene.

3
Madkat124•

We need a female Turian.

I'd really enjoy some multi-dimensional romances in the game. I want to see how aspects such as your reputation and your relationship with your partner affect the romance sub-story.

Dragon Age 2 provides a pretty good example of this, as romances can either be based on friendship or rivalry. Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Origins also did this to an extent, where dialogue with your partner determines their choices in the romance sub-plot - like whether or not they'll support your morally gray actions, or if they'll engage in non-monogamous sexual deviancy with you and other to-be-determined partners (the important question).

Seeing something like that would be great for dynamic character development.

I also like that in Dragon Age, you are free to explore romantic options before you commit to anything. Mass Effect has the whole, "epic Hollywood story" thing going on, but Dragon Age's relationships are much more real. People don't have sex just because they're at a point of no return. They do it because they want to.

Mass Effect sees relationships as a climb, where it climaxes in -cough- sex. Dragon Age sees relationships as organic, living things that have ups and downs all the time.

I guess what I'm saying is that Mass Effect should treat its romantic sub-plots as Dragon Age does.

I know a lot of people really enjoy their love interests, and that they're a staple of Bioware games, but I really want to see Bioware explore the possibility of having a storytelling or gameplay benefit to not having a romantic interest in Andromeda. Something like where characters approach the PC and confess an interest, only to have the PC turn them down, which leads to interesting and divergent places later in the game. They felt kind of forced and obligatory in ME1, where your character could actually just stumble into a relationship after two conversations.

It would be nice to have an option for a longer, more realistic relationship arc, and some benefit to having no relationship at all.

I hope it has fewer but with more scenes and more seamlessly integrated into the plot at certain points. However I fully expect them to include one option for every breed of LGBT and being more concerned with inclusivity and representation than to make something with more quality than quantity.

That said, I wasn't one of those losers who ranted about the lack of "pretty" characters in DAI. I thought it was bold of Bioware to make the main chick be rather tall with a bulky jaw and a scar on her cheek. They tried making sex-appeal in other places and it made them stand out better than Miranda being a sex object for example. Solas also had a great romance arc in that game, but still, I felt every romance subplot was overall too short-lived in DAI. I wish we could have a game where you could live out a fantasy of being the protagonist embarking his biggest adventure with his lover at his side. I want a female LI who's very involved in the plot with my character as I take them both on story missions.

2
Dropkicksslytherins•

every breed of LGBT.

...Jeez dude. Maybe don't refer to us like that.

1
linkenski•

Sorry, I should've explained myself more respectfully than that. I realize I'm being slightly egotistical when I complain they're being inclusive. After all I get what I want as a straight white man. I just wish including options for everyone didn't come at such a high cost, sometimes being chosen instead of developing the plot more.

Then again, it was more interesting to have exclusively straight or gay romances in DA:I than it was to make every character bisexual in DA2.

1
Dropkicksslytherins•

Hey, it's OK. Just you know, I was a bit taken back at the term. Actually having straight or gay romances in DA:I did work off, since it reflected, you know, life.

Other than Solas, who was super late in dev and meant to bisexual.

1
linkenski•

DA:I did work, yes because it made it more relatable to everybody, but it also kind of broke its established setting a little bit because it used to be low-fantasy where certain representations of RL demographics were depicted as low-class and with poor privileges because it was a reflection of history and not modern day -- that's the way Dragon Age originally asserted itself as a fantasy universe -- and that's where I strongly disliked DA:I to be honest, not because I have anything against diversity personally, but because authentically and in its fiction I think it broke its own rules for the sake of pandering and to me, being a creator myself, I'm very keen on the art of it all moreso than the player-agency.

That said, I think perhaps it was a necessary move for them even though I'm slightly iffy on it since it does pull in more people to Dragon Age and you could justify it by the fact that DA:I takes place in a time after DA:O but it was still a bit of a stretch. I wouldn't have anything against it representing reality the way it did if it had been a new IP for example. It's just because it's slightly on the retcon side that I felt it was dishonest and untrue to its former self, and I hope this doesn't come across as a "I hate anything but white straight people" kind of way.

AtlasFlynn•

Romantic partners without the hero worship would be a big plus for me. No more confessing the love to the player character regardless of your actions (talking about you, Tali and Liara. Stop stalking me) but make it a gradual progress where both parties can show their affection for each other and build it up from there

2
aadmiralackbar•

K R O G A N R O G A N Remember that leak that talked about your krogan squadmate, Drack? Yeah, that's my shit.

Listen man all I'm saying is that female turians as a whole were too far and too few in the games as it was. I just think it'd be nice to get acquainted with one, that's all.
