I wish I were the willow

I wish I were the willow near the church
growing from the cracks in the path we tread,
so I could breathe down on our heads
in green sighs and watch my hand slip
into your flannel pocket like it had always been there.

I wish I were the mossy bridge in the garden
and could feel our planted feet stand together,
or the rose bush creeping up the old millhouse;
I'd stretch higher so I could see
the point at which you kissed my homeless lips,
at which the world changed
without the soil beneath us noticing.

I could be the tendrils flowing from flowerpots
hung haphazardly on the wall of the shed
that we never repainted, because there was no time
when we were walking through grass and
obliviously wrapped up in one another;
our shadows writ large.
