I Am Alone
I am alone.
My attention is stolen from across the room by a figure; a silhouette-
I want to be its friend more than anything I've ever wanted.
As I walk towards the figure, it does not respond to my approach.
Does it not notice me,
or is it pretending to not notice me?
Which is worse?
As I get close to the figure, it dissipates-
and there it is again. Across the room.
I am alone.
This time, there is a glass wall between us.
I am dissatisfied.
After some work at it, I broke through the wall.
Once I approach the figure,
again,
it dissipates.
I am alone.
This time, a staircase appears in front of me,
and the figure is on the top of the staircase.
Why?
Why torture me this way?
If you don't want my companionship,
don't force me to work for yours.
As I climb the overly-tall staircase,
I reflect on past mistakes.
Once I get close to the figure, I reach out-
and again,
it dissipates.
I am alone.
Again.
