Terry Stotts Appreciation Thread

With the absurdity of the David Blatt firing, I've been thinking about how grateful I am that we have Stotts at the helm. He's done a fantastic job with every roster he's been given, and I think the offensive system he's installed this year is remarkable. The players buy what he's selling. I also spoke with him at a game briefly last year, he struck me as a genuinely nice person too.

Thank you Coach Stotts

Stotts is a goddamn boss. Adaptable, great system, gets along with players. Also, is it just me, or is he slowly getting a swagger like Carlisle and Pop?

Yeah I see it too. It's vindicating to see what his system and coaching staff can do with 'so little.'

Papa Stotts!

DrTom said it. The guy has built a great system on both sides of the ball, maximizes the strengths of his players, and has their ear. I don't see how you can give him anything other than an A+. I want him locked up for the long term. Pay the man, Mr. Allen!

Also, all hail Troll Stotts: http://i.imgur.com/iaQINvm.png

And side benefit, he looks related to Christoph Waltz in that picture.

It helps that Lillard isn't actively creating dissonance.

Lillard is the definition of a pro

I remember how unsexy the hire seemed at the time, but we really hit the jackpot. We got one of the best coaches in the game.

LacklusterMeh•

Haha yeah people were hoping we would hire Kaleb Canales.

oregoon•

I remember this sub at that time, most people were supporting Kaleb. God that would have been a disaster.

I remember thinking, "Who is Terry Stotts?"

1

Man, there's this mod on a blazers facebook group that thinks Stotts needs to be fired. What an idiot that guy is.

tlinder•

Facebook has mods?

Facebook groups do

The Blazers have been by far the best coached team of the past 4 years other than the Mavs and Spurs, which is absurd...

paper_thin_hymn•

It's absolutely amazing what he's been able to do this year. Well done, coach!

This thread is so great I want to hug all of you.

but would you rather have stotts over thibs, blatt, or brooks?

No, yes, yes.

I like Stotts too, but I kinda wish he got angry at the players more often. The Sixers game debacle is what stands out to me.. He should have been pissed at the pitiful effort the players were giving. Being a nice guy and a "player's coach" is nice and all, but sometimes a coach needs to get mad.

Why does a coach need to get mad and yell at everyone though? In what other job is it considered effective management to just lose it an go off on those you manage? Most people do not react well to that. It's just become part of sports, so we expect it now, but that doesn't mean it's the best approach.

Also, different people react better to different management. And it seems like Stotts absolutely knows how to reach the players.

Sports aren't like other jobs. I definitely think coaches getting upset can sometimes help motivate players to play harder.

Keyword being sometimes

1
davanillagorilla•

Well of course I don't think coaches should be yelling at their players all the time.

1
jtech0007•

I am sure they heard in on the plane to DC. They beat the Wiz by 10 the next day.

2
davanillagorilla•

Why not during games then?

Just like in life, sometimes you have to let people learn from their mistakes in the moment. People forget that these guys have been playing basketball at a high level since they were 12 years old. Getting blown out is nothing new, winning by 30 is nothing new. The players know EXACTLY what is going on, but are not executing what was worked on over and over in practice and before the game with sets and the defensive focus. The coach yelling at them or losing his mind would do nothing to solve the issue at that time as the players (assuming the coaches have done their job) have everything they need to know to play the game and win. If they don't do that, it's on them, not the coach.

Coaches showing that they are upset or disappointed definitely works in sports. I've seen it work many times in person and on TV.

I don't think a coach getting mad "destroys team morale" unless the players are extremely fragile mentally.

Dude, appreciation threads are for guys that have left the team...

-24
cubs0505OP•

I don't think so. Sorta like you want to appreciate what you have before it's gone.

16
thankyouforfu•

Then where the fuck is the Damian Lillard appreciation thread? The CJ McCollum appreciation thread? The Allen Crabbe appreciation thread? The Paul Allen appreciation thread?

These appreciation threads are fucking ridiculous and nonsensical. You don't see the other team subreddits doing stupid shit like this.

-26
colehole5•

I feel like this is an irrational thing to complain about

19
thankyouforfu•

And I feel like this is a stupid thing to post about.

-24

If only there was some way to see how people in the sub felt about this post. Like, for example, if you could vote on whether or not you felt the post was worthwhile.

Whoa whoa whoa there, that's some sorcebangery if I ever did see it.

Hahahaha.... fu stand for kung fu, Einstein ;)

No, he's right.

I definitely saw this and panicked until I saw what it was.

Bedge certainly handles "appreciation threads" differently, we can say that.
