Possibility of game jacking?
So the folks over at Unfiction seem to believe what we have here is a case of gamejacking. I think it's worth asking ourselves how we got here, and taking a step back to review everything that has happened so far.
This entire ARG blew up when we got a list of strings found in the poster image posted on twitter. Out the list of 200+ strings, "G5MC" was the first one (though when viewing the full text of the image it only appears near the very bottom). When you google "G5MC" you find the Ham Radio site "QRZCQ" a few results down. Also it's important to note, this string was posted 10 days ago by the same user and then deleted.
So let's pause and question so things.
First, why isn't "G5MC" in the official poster image on 10cloverfieldlane.com? Why would they only include it in the twitter image (especially with the risk that twitter may re-encode the image in some way to lose that data).
Second, the QRZCQ profile originally linked to an audio file with the clue of "soon", and just recently after we were led to the site, it quickly changed to an imgur link of a mysterious image. The image was uploaded at 7pm EST. The image contained a QR code that linked to an IP address that is NOT Paris, but is in France. The fact that the info changed from a link to an audio file to imgur during the exact time we were led to the site and discussing it means someone was watching these boards and responding to the fact that the audio was found, all within about an hour or so of the discovery.
Third, there was a JJ Abrams quote at the IP address which completely breaks the 4th wall and seems out of the ordinary in terms of an ARG that, up until this point, had not been self aware. Think of the ARG for the original movie. It wasn't aware there was a movie. The characters had myspace pages. Not the actors, not the directors or producers... the characters. To suddenly reference the producer of the franchise in the actual ARG seems sloppy and a sign of something fishy to me.
So now we have this brand new path that was apparently just sitting there to be found, but ONLY if you picked out the right 4 letter string from a list of over 200 that was pulled from strings.exe. And strings.exe just randomly decided to put that particular string at the very top of the list despite that string only appearing within the last 30 lines or so of ALL the data in the image. And then we are expected to google that ONE specific string and find the HAM Radio page for that callsign (which isn't a real registered callsign) and because it has an anagram of Cloverfield it is legit. And they link to an image which has some text requesting us to call them. This time clearly displayed at the top of the image data in plain english (not buried in strings like G5MC).
I honestly, really want to believe this is all kicking off and we are diving in deep. But I think suspicions need to be raised about why now, and why that specific string and how that was to be expected. The users at Unfiction seem a lot more reserved and level headed about seeing past the excitement and trying to determine what's really going on and I think we should do the same.
Are we being gamejacked? Did someone set this up out of boredom of the lack of an ARG? Why now? Why did the original person to find the string also immediately show that they the QRZCQ page? Why did they post it 10 days ago and then delete it?
Everything after the G5MC string has been relatively simple. The audio file spectrogram. The imgur link, the QR code, the IP address, the "Call me" message in the image. Even the imgur image was sized at 1801x2008 (the date of the first movie). Everything just seems to be a little too on the nose after the widely impossibly hard "G5MC" string is found. And we didn't find it, or find the QRZCQ page, that was all provided to us by one user (who tried to do this 10 days ago and deleted it). Is it Bad Robot giving us a nudge? Maybe! But let's also be wary that it could be someone game jacking the ARG. It wouldn't be too difficult to set up after picking a random string from the image.
I think the big kicker for me is. "G5MC" should be in the poster image on the main website AND twitter if this is the big kick-off clue. Why it's only on ONE of the images of the poster out of everything they've posted on social media... it just seems strange.
Is anyone else suspicious? Or am I just being the resident conspiracy theorist?
