How about painting the outside of a body?

I have a couple of bodies I don't care anything about and wondering about painting the outside so I can go for some matte finish. I was thinking some certain solvents sprayed lightly would give a dull finish to help the paint bite better. Thoughts?

Here's a pretty good breakdown from URC's youtube channel on some techniques on achieving a matte finish. https://youtu.be/MuToUlGpR0E

Nice. I wonder if anyone has experimented with plasti-dip paints on the inside, where you could later peel it off and try something else.

That was actually something I was looking to try out eventually, but given the nature of the lexan, you'd still achieve the glossy look on the outside. As to whether or not it will bond, I would say is yet to be seen, but given the temporary nature of the stuff, seems pretty low risk.

Yeah, my mind shifted gears there to general paint technique rather than just flat when I thought about the plasti-dip. I imagine it would come off pretty easy, maybe too easy.

I just don't know how it would bond with lexan. I did my rims on my car with four coats and it's been good for three years.

I have...recently painted portions of a body with plastic dip (well flexible dip to be exact) definitely appeared resistant to bind on the first light coat but then smoothed out real nice after..Looks pretty goo to me...No matte finish tho

You'd still want to use a lexan paint. Its automatically gonna be a matte finish, the only thing that makes it glossy is the plastic shell.

Some lexan paint, particularly Tamiya, will have a semi-gloss or satin finish.

True it wont be totally dull but it wont be shiny either. I always keep some scrap lexan to test colors on

I think it might be cool to do a distresed look. Where you add sand between layers of differnt colors of paint for a rusted out effect

I've had success with a crawler body that I painted silver on the inside and flat olive drab on the outside. I used model paint of the outside. When it got scratched or rubbed off, it would reveal the silver paint on the inside and make it look like it had worn down to bare metal.

That's cool. I wanted to put on a couple thick coats of silver and back it with white. While its still wet I would like to scrub some of the paint off and then fill in the holes with something neon. The idea would be to get a "techno scrape" effect.... I haven't thought up a name, just thought it was a cool idea.

I did the same thing. Krylon fusion or the new colormaster paints on the outside.

Yep, lexan paint bonds with the body shell and stays a little flexible. Other paints will start flaking off the first time you drive into something. Doesn't matter if you paint the inside or the outside.

I painted my SCX10 silver on the inside and backed with white. Then I painted the outside with my main color. It has stayed on so for but my reasoning was so when it scratches, it'll look like it's done to metal and then I can eventually put flat black on the spots to look like primer.

Spray truck bed liner on it.

You want a matte finish? Paint the inside like normal. Then you can get a spazz stick matte clear in a rattle can. Spray that on the outside where you want it to be matte. Done.
