So I wrote some fan fiction.

Fan Work

To preface I am absolutely excited about this game and cannot wait to play it.

The Explorer A piece of No Man’s Sky fan fiction

The first thing I became aware of was a blackness, a senseless void in which I seemed to float. I was and therefore I could be. From this darkness I slowly became conscious of my form, my body responding to my thoughts. I had arms and legs, hands and a sense of pressure that told me I was in some kind of protective encasing. My eyes opened and light blinded me momentarily.

As my vision cleared I began to make out shapes under the light of a strange blue sun. A mountain range lay visible in the distance with yellow clouds floating in the pale green sky above them. In my immediate vicinity the area appeared barren and devoid of life. Strange crystal formations sprouted from the ground sporadically in shades of red and gold. The ground itself was rocky and violet, harsh and uncompromising in the blue light.

As I continued to survey my surroundings I also noticed a strange device in one of my hands. It had an air of violence, hanging there in my hand with a gaping mouth on one end. It fit in my hand perfectly and at once I knew what it was. It was an extension of myself as much tool as it was a weapon. It could enhance my understanding of my surroundings with the touch of a small button. One trigger fired a volley of strange green pulses that crackled through the air as they sped away from my hand, the weapon had teeth to be sure. The other trigger produced a strange blue beam that devoured the crystal formations and produced from them component molecules. These molecules were also a tool of sorts, the knowledge of these things flowed into my mind unbidden. Knowledge I had no business knowing and yet it was all there in my mind, neatly catalogued and compartmentalized.

Images and flashes came to me then as I fell to the ground under the onslaught. A strange object afloat in a red sky with a pulsing red center that I could feel speaking to me yet I could not make out the words. Vast fields of stars and galaxies swirled and moved before me. The cockpit of a strange machine rushing towards the surface of a planet. The weapon, my weapon destroying everything before it. Then only darkness encompassed me once more.

When I awoke I was still on that strange planet but it was with a new curiosity that I studied my surroundings. Night had come and in the sky above me stars and constellations were visible. It was then that I finally saw it. A ship lay dimly lit a short distance away, small and plain I had almost missed it when I first looked around. I only noticed now because it had some sort of lights blinking upon its sides. I rushed to examine it more closely and knew once I got closer that it was mine as well. Mine in the same way the omni-device was, an extension of my existence in this universe. Once I had settled myself into the cockpit I began to take stock of what was and wasn’t functional. To my dismay it seemed that the main hyper drive system was offline and weapons were also functioning poorly. To my delight however the sub-light engines spooled up immediately and I could feel the ground shifting away from me as I took to the night sky for the first time.

I pondered my situation as I took my flyer out for its maiden voyage. I was here alone in an alien world beneath an alien sky. I had knowledge of my suit, my omni-device and my ship that felt implanted. I did not know where I had come from or how I had come to be on the planet in the first place. I did not know whether I had purpose here in this universe or not. I knew only one thing as I pointed the nose of my flyer upward towards the heavens, I had arrived and a new universe awaited me among the stars.
