Guess What "Journalists" Will Say/Rate Fates

Fates

With roughly a week before release, let's have a little game to bring out all the creative juices and salt to have a little fun. You can say whatever you want just spoiler it if it will contain something spoilery.

Localization can't melt steel beams, Suzie.

They will praise Hoshido as amazing gameplay, criticise Nohr for not allowing you to grind and say Phoenix mode makes the game accessible for anyone.

115
SabinSuplexington•

not allowing you to grin

I wouldn't like a game that prevents smiling either.

66
asaver•

It sucks that Emblem-amie didn't have the smile thing Poké-amie had

17
Yeratrix•

I think my camera on my 3ds is busted since it never worked for me, either that or I'm so ugly it made my pokemon sad.

Then don't play Thracia.

Don't forget the lack of mii support and motion controls!

12

I assume whatever they say it will be tediously picked at by people who claim they don't care about video game journalism even though they spend several hours a day complaining about it in the most hackneyed, humourless way imaginable.

There, I found a way to feel smug and superior to both groups, what do I win.

I fully expect GameXplain to have a good review though. Those guys are awesome.

12
TwistedSword•

Eh, they make some shitty mistakes as well. I'm still salty af over their review for PSMD, where they complained about the game's mechanics being too roguelike. In a roguelike.

29
LaJusticia•

That rustled my jimmies as well; might as well say Mario is bad because too much jumping. He didn't even mention the soundtrack or at least in barely any detail.

PSMD would have been my GOTY if Xenoblade X didn't exist

5
TwistedSword•

Yep, those two were probably tied for my GOTY. I haven't really dove into the postgame of Xenoblade yet, but 100%ed PSMD, so that might skew my perspective a little bit.

2

Wasn't it a GameXplain guy who gave the terrible Radiant Dawn review? The person who admitted to hating strategy games in the first sentence of the review?

(although it has been a while since I read it, I may be remembering incorrectly)

2†
AzureVortex•

It was Destructoid who gave that review, not GameXplain.

18
Frostblazer•

Ah, thank you for correcting me! I knew that when my memory was that hazy I was probably getting something wrong.

2

No it was a Destructoid article. Written by Leigh Alexandra.

2

Seriously, Leigh Alexandra? No wonder the reviewer didn't seem to care...

I fully expect GameXplain's review to be one of the best, Derrick seems like he knows what he's talking about most of the time.

Hoshido was amazing. Even better than awakening.

At first I was going to be upset because I thought you were suggesting that Awakening was superiot to Fates when Awakening's story wasn't too good in my opinion, but you Persona comparison was great. Most people like Persona 4, but for series veterans, it's usually a fairly even split between Persona 3 and Persona 4.

15
flamingtoastjpnLeif•

What does P3 have over P4? Just wondering. I have both Persona 3 Portable (stuck on the Rampage Drive) and Persona 4 Golden (stuck on Shadow Mitsuyo) on my Vita, and I'm probably going to pick up one or the other soon and keep going.

2
hyperoxemia•

Persona 3 has a darker, more mature story and is more difficult while Persona 4 is more idealistic in its themes. I personally just prefer Persona 3 due to me being able to play as a woman and I like the cast better, but Persona 4 definitely wins on the gameplay front. Story is just depending on what kind of person you are, though.

14
Twilightdusk•

While I liked the characters in Persona 3, I found the overall story to be the game's biggest weak point, especially compared to Persona 4. 3 was good at presenting a dark, eerie tone and all, but the story (in my memory at least) basically amounted to "Shadow monsters are running amok due to...umm...some kind of science experiment I guess? And there's also people worshiping a dark god that's somehow connected to them? And our driving goal is to...climb this tower that our school turns into because....reasons?"

Persona 4 on the other hand had a much better constructed story. There's issues with the overall plot, even/especially when you have the extra information from the bonus ending, but at any given moment you knew exactly why you were bothering to go into the various dungeons, whereas Persona 3 just felt like "Climb as high as you can in the tower just because. And oh, you reached the arbitrary barrier that will go away after the next story event, guess you can stop now."

10
NeptuniasBeard•

Persona 3 has a darker, more mature story

I'm the one person on earth that disagrees on both accounts. Persona 3 had a grimdark atmosphere, but P4 had the darker story and more mature/relatable themes. Persona 3 had you kill monsters of the week for most of its game, and the one pulling the strings gets dealt with in the same cutscene they revealed themself. P4 had you hunt down a serial killer/rapist. Killed off kids, allowed you to kill a man in cold blood, and actually have your characters live with what they've done. As for maturity, Persona 3's main villain is the embodiment of death, and death is apparently a thing everyone yearns for, which is bs. Persona 4 was about how people are willing to live in ignorance and hide their true selves as it suits them, which one could actually make a case for. Not to mention that the main antagonist of P4 had actual motivations and a backstory, instead of just being crazy in order to get the plot rolling.

8
MrDudlles•

Hello fellow vita fan, its so nice to be reminded that there are more of us. It seems like a plot /character preference.

2†
NeptuniasBeard•

I'm sorry but Persona 1 sucked ass and Persona 2 was as boring as it was easy, which is to say very. They didn't catch on because they weren't good games. If any Persona games are damaging to the brand, it's the first 3 games.

5

Eh, I like the direction the series went. Devil Survivor seems to be more of a spiritual successor to old Persona, so I'm just waiting for DS3 to come out.

12
The_Magus_199•

So now we just need to get IS to make an Emblem Survivor series, basically?

1
RedWolke•

To be honest I feel both games are pretty average, with P3 being just a little better than P4. I don't think they got anything over other SMT games, and it's weird that they are so well-loved.

They aren't bad games, but saying they are amazing games is really pushing it.

3
CaesarCV•

I think one of the parts that people find appealing over the mainline SMT games is the addition of the Social Link/Dating Sim elements. They're commonly commented on as something that makes them more interesting than other RPGs, while the Mainline SMT games are percieved as being more generic. Granted, both series are amazing

2
CaesarCV•

I kind of liked the change in direction if I'm going to be honest. The first two persona games, while excellent, were far more similar to the other Shin Megami Tensei mainline games. Persona 3/4 is where it branched out into something different. Not sure what you mean by reputation though, the games went from rather obscure to rather critically acclaimed.

Granted, Persona 5 seems to include more elements from 1 and 2 as far as I can tell (Demons, Gun attacks, Etc) so it's kind of interesting to see where it will go.

2
BloodyBottom•

I have long believed Awakening is the Persona 3 of the Fire Emblem series and that Fates will be its Persona 4.

Pretty much.

2
NinjaKnight92•

For somebody unfamiliar with persona, is persona 3 kinda like ff vii or ocarina of time for their respective series?

1
hyperoxemia•

In my eyes, Persona 3 and 4 are more akin to Final Fantasy 4 and 6. Both are great games, and whichever one is better is simply up to someone's opinion.

4
NinjaKnight92•

Oh, I see. I guess the question I was asking was persona 3 the game that broke the series out of their niche and more so into mainstream gaming.

1
BloodyBottom•

I'm not sure you could draw a comparison like that since there are only 4 Persona games currently and the way in which they changed is different. 1 and 2 are completely different from 3 and 4 in many ways. I almost want to say something like Fallout 1/2 vs Fallout 3/4 is a more accurate comparison.

As a filthy casual who was recently given P3 and P4 for PS2 by a friend (who says I must finish and love and cherish them), I'm curious why you say that. I do have to say that so far, P3 isn't fun for me, and I'm hoping P4 is much better. (P3 (to me) is like an endless slog through a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon interspersed with cool cutscenes, silly character interactions, and awesome boss fights. He disagrees violently with me. :( )

I just hopped on here to see what everybody is saying about Fates, to see if it's worth getting. I had played Awakening, and liked it, but if I want to beat it and not focus solely on it, I'm going to have to skip classic mode. :/ I'm just not good at these kinds of games. (For reference, I beat Valkyria Chronicles without having a dead character, but the DLC is annoying to think through without cheesing and I did have one mission that gave me fits. So yeah, I'm bad. (Probably.))

Do you think Fates/Awakening are a good "jump on" point for people like me, or do you mourn the change of the franchise for it? I'm curious.

If I get it, I'll likely grab an old physical copy and Retron it. I don't have a Wii U sadly. Thank you for the recommendation.

I do remember playing The Sacred Stones when I was much younger, but I had no idea what I was doing and predictably got bodied. :/ A couple of my friends did play the version you're talking about, though, and I remember them loving it. They always had loved games like that though, and in general were (and are) better than me at almost every type of game.

I'm sorry a series you hold close to heart has changed so much. I hope casuals like me don't completely ruin it for you. :(

2
brocopina•

I'd say you can go either or with FE7 (fire emblem) or FE8 (sacred stones). FE8 should actually be more forgiving for new players thatn FE7 because FE8 allows you to grind! So if you have trouble you can train your units 'til you're ready. I remember FE7's tutorial being a lot more noob friendly to FE8's. But my memory might just be fuzzy on that. I think you should try the FEGBA ones first. Mechanics are different between FEGBA and FE3DS. If you go 3ds and then go backwards with GBA, it might turn you off

2
CaesarCV•

I'm a little confused by the whole matter of FE:A "depriving us of traditional Fire Emblem Content". I've never entirely gotten the criticism considering that at least 90% of the game is similar to other Fire Emblems. The main changes are the character design style, which to be fair has changed multiple times throughout the course of the series, the addition of the Avatar character, which can be annoying but if Kamui/Corrin is any indication more of a replacement of the traditional Lord Character, and children characters/dating. There are a few bad supports/characters and plot complications/stupidity, but really I feel that criticism can be leveled at nearly any game in the series once you take the nostalgia goggles off.

2
DeoGame•

I think it's more the mechanics that were removed/toned down in Awakening, the non-linear gameplay (which was also contested in Gaiden/SS) as well as the lack of diversity in both side-objectives and mission objectives.

1
Soziele•

As just my opinion, Persona 4 is the better game. It takes everything that 3 does well (solid gameplay, memorable boss fights, a killer soundtrack, interesting characters) and does it better (soundtrack is debatable, the rest 4 all the way). For one every dungeon in 4 is unique, so it removes the slow progression of Tartarus where everything is the same for long stretches. Second is the characters in 4 are just better. They're much more like real people, and the voice acting is much better.

2
teezoen•

I really really dislike the grind. The game outside of Tartarus is FUN. But inside of it, its the same music, the same battles, the same animations. It just kills me. I'm 30 hours in. How much longer till I can move onto 4?

2
Soziele•

At 30 hours already, you've probably got at least another 20 to go. Tartarus does get a bit better as you get to the higher floors and the music and scenery evolve a bit, but I felt the same way as you on those lower floors where it is all the same.

2
Last_Gallifreyan•

"I don't like strategy RPGs. In fact I hate them. But still, I'm going to review Fire Emblem Fates" ... Big surprise, reviewer goes on to tear apart a game he/she didn't like or want to play in the first place.

39
luigipheonix•

They will say that Nohr is much too hard even on normal mode, and they will say Hoshido was the prefect and logical evolution of the series. I predict 9/10 for Hoshido and 6/10 for Nohr.

29
seynicalOP•

Hoshido was the prefect and logical evolution of the series.

I'm so triggered right now. A perfect review of someone from IGKotaSpotGon

17

I mean they're not wrong. Hoshido is pretty much Awakenin 2.0 But Better this time.

16

Didn't someone from Kotaku get triggered when they played Classic mode because of the deaths?

8

Wouldn't surprise me tbh. Maybe you shouldn't play a wargame if death triggers you.

2
theprodigy64•

2
CaesarCV•

Really? I'd find that surprising...

1

Nohr is too hard, no Miis or gyro controls make the game a bore and Hoshido is much better because reasons.

27
scarecr0w141•

Pros:

  • best Fire Emblem game out of the games I've played (Awakening)

Cons:

  • Forced DLC to grind levels in Conquest
  • Conquest is too hard
  • removed content
  • lack of Roy amiibo support
  • lack of gyroscope
  • 3D is underutilized
  • motion controls are underutilized
  • 240p

Fire Emblem Fates is the best 3DS game. It is only held back by it's DLC, route-splitting, and content being removed. Hoshido is the natural progression of the series and Nohr is a relic of the past that should have kept with history. Arbitrary fractional number over a whole number.

25
FeatherwickAlvis•

You forgot the part where they'll claim that Nohr is actually them trying something new, while Hoshido is the classic experience.

17
AppaTheBizon•

3
ironminer888•

Motion controls. In a strategy game. How and when has that worked?

Hoshido - 9/10 - best gameplay and story

Nohr - 6/10 - fine story, confusing objectives, no grinding

IK - 8/10 - largest cast of characters, best level design

19
JoshuaBr•

I'm sure you guys will find something to complain about no matter what scores it gets

18
Aninymouse3•

Best post.

5
cargup•

Both Conquest and Hoshido will receive great reviews. You're memeing if you say otherwise. Same as Awakening, both games bend over backwards to be approachable and newcomer-friendly, and there's a ton of fluffy side shit to appeal players who don't care much about the core gameplay (as well as those who do).

Let's not forget Blazing Sword was well-received and it had varied objectives/map design and minimal grinding.

17
CaesarCV•

Whoa....real, non-sarcastic answers? Those are hard to get on this sub! Thank for it though. It's a pretty realistic description of what we'll probably see come next Wendesday.

2
Darthkeeper•

"Conquest introduces many new objectives to the series giving it much more variety than Awakening and Birthright. However, it is more difficult, even on normal. Often restricting players to the units that can be used, and to add insult to injury there is no grinding. All in all, Conquest is for those Fire Emblem Fans looking for a real challenge." 7-8/10

"Birthright, is a very fun classic Fire Emblem experience, reminiscent of Awakening. It is much more balanced than Awakening, but the gameplay can get stale at times. Fire Emblem fans will enjoy this game!" 9/10

I'm just torturing myself at this point...

17
The_Magus_199•

Oh dear Ashera, I actually recoiled when I saw "classic" used there...

2
Darthkeeper•

Of course it's just an exaggeration, but there is some truth to it, sadly.

2
Eldryth•

The sad thing is, that's exactly how it's described on the official site. Birthright is a "classic" Fire Emblem experience, while Conquest is more complex. Although, they did at least have "classic" in quotes...

I kind of hope that he doesn't lol. Yahtzee has something of a bias against Nintendo games. Still might be a fun video though heh.

1

Why is journalists in quotes? Is this about m'ethics?

12
Logic_Nuke•

Games journalism is legitimately terrible though, just not for any of the reasons GG seems to think.

24
hyperoxemia•

It's about Ethics in Games Journalism.

Not saying I disagree, but GG ruined any chance of that argument being taken seriously for a long time, upsettingly.

6
seynicalOP•

More of reliability. I don't give a fuck to whatever cause and shit people are fighting for.

6
hyperoxemia•

I can't say I understand, but I get why you'd be wary about reviewers handling a series like Fire Emblem.

3
TGOT•

I can't say I understand

Reviews panned Radiant Dawn for lack of Mii support and oftentimes you could tell that the reviewer didn't get past part 1/4. This sub, along with most of the FE community, puts RD in the top 5 FE games.

22
seynicalOP•

It's more of getting wary of reviewers in general in any other game.

4
LionOhDay•

Well Reviewers would be a better choice of word for what they're actually doing.

3
Jarial•

It's got a bathhouse and waifu's. 11/10

They gave Radiant Dawn a 6 for being too hard, I wouldn't put it past them.

They also panned the lack of mii and motion control support :P
