An Idiot's Guide to Ultimate Necrophobe - "Your Barriers Against Mine!" Edition

Guide/Analysis

Hello, it's me again for another Ultimate boss guide! :D

Necrophobe is going to be very interesting. Depending on the team you use, it'll be either very hard or not too bad.

Also, the name of this edition is brought to you by u/JuicymamaBH, the Gold medalist for the Maduin Challenge! No meme hating please :v

Target Scores:

  • Hit Necrophobe with fire elemental attacks

  • Hit Necrophobe with ice elemental attacks

  • Hit Necrophobe with lightning elemental attacks

Movepool:

Necrophobe only becomes targetable after the four Barriers are killed. However, he DOES still attack while the Barriers are alive, unlike previous incarnations.

---Necrophobe---

Barriers are alive:

  • Flash: Inflicts all targets with blind. Very cruel to physical team especially (however, do note that Lifesiphon has perfect hit rate). I hope this isn't one of Rubicante's flashes...

Normal (76-100%):

  • Attack: Pow! It does very little damage! Single target, too, making it Necrophobe's weakest attack. You really want him to use this attack.

  • Vacuum Wave: Deals physical damage to all targets. Many of you have already seen this in Ultimate Exdeath's battle. This one's actually toned down a little bit compared to Exdeath's version (slightly weaker, but lacks the chance of an additional hit).

  • Sap: Deals physical damage to one target and inflicts Sap. This one is actually weaker than one Daily trash's Sap (Sundaily's dreaded Crew Dust). As such, shouldn't be too big of a deal :)

  • Hurricane: Deals heavy non-elemental proportional damage to one target. From what I've seen, this thing is a ~80% current HP gravity. IT HURTS.

  • Flash: Inflicts all targets with Blind. Quickly! Shield the children!

  • Flare: Deals massive non-elemental magical damage to one target. Painful, but severely toned down with mitigation. All in all, it's less a threat than Necrophobe's Vacuum Wave due to its one target nature. Do note that this ignores reflect and runic!

Weak (51-75%):

  • Moves from above, but loses Flash. Hurricane turns into a counter (no regular version, anymore).

  • Firaga/Blizzaga/Thundaga: Deals heavy fire, ice, or thunder damage respectively to one/all targets. The single target one hurts more than the multitarget variation. Once again, many of you have seen this from Exdeath's battle. Once again, it seems slightly nerfed.

Very Weak (0-50%):

  • Chance of acting twice a turn!

  • Moves from Weak, but Firaga, Blizzaga, and Thundaga has been upgraded to Firaja, Blizzaja, and Thundaja, respectively. Still in two different forms (single and AoE), but obviously does more damage. It's interesting to note that this is the first time we've seen an Ultimate boss use a Ja, before, which is interesting as it's more or less a sign of a difficulty spike.

---Barriers---

  • Flare: Deals massive non-elemental magical damage to one target. From videos, this seems slightly weaker than Necrophobe's Flare. However, do note that there are four of them, who can ambush you, demolishing your entire team if you're not careful. Do note that this attack cannot be nullified by Runic or Reflect!

  • Holy: Deals massive holy magical damage to one target. About as strong as Flare. This one, however, is more dangerous as you can't mitigate it with break(down)s. Do note that this attack cannot be nullified by Runic or Reflect!

  • Firaga/Blizzaga/Thundaga: Same deal as Necrophobe, 2 different forms (single target and AoE). Weaker than Necrophobe's, though.

  • Hurricane (Counter): Deals non-elemental proportional damage to ALL targets. SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than Necrophobe's version, but AoE. This is specifically a counter to Magic attacks, so most of you physical people won't see this.

  • Flare, Holy, and Flash are also counters. Flare and Holy are counters to magical attacks. Flash is a counter to anything.

Percentages are rough estimations. Will update once AI is datamined.

Analysis:

Oh boy. Necrophobe is going to trample certain physical teams (bar Lifesiphon, so calm down) with his AoE blinds. On the other side, mage teams, while aren't annoyed by blind, will be severely punished by the Barrier's counters. Necrophobe himself isn't too bad. You'll definitely going to need some AoE attacks to kill his Barriers, and Necrophobe himself is weak to nearly anything elemental, bar Dark abilites. Overall, despite some RNG troll with Flash and counters, this isn't a particularly hard fight. However, this is much more difficult than that Ultimate Failure Maduin many of you fought, as Necrophobe can actually do damage.

Finally, DeNA was really lazy with the Target Scores. This is what, the third time they've used the exact same target scores?

Teambuilding

RW selection:

Usual RW selection here. Do note that Necrophobe is more magic oriented that attack based. If you have the "Holy Trinity" covered (Wall, Medica, Hastega), consider bringing Lightning's SSB, Crushing Blow, which will absolutely demolish Necrophobe!

SG=SS2>Hastega>Medicas>Heroic Harmony

Abilites:

Typical recommended ability suggestions. AoE attacks such as Maduin, Valefor, and Bladeblitz are very useful in killing the Barriers. All elemental attacks are wonderful here, such as Spellblades, Elemental Jumps , Black Magic, and Summons like Phoenix and Alexander (do note that they should be fairly well honed, though [~R4]). I recommend Shellga but Protectga can be optional (Vacuum Wave hurts though). Don't forget Breakdowns and Dances for mitigation! Carbuncle could be possible, but requires help with a medica and heavy regen (due to Necrophobe's extensive AoE attacks). Note that the new 5 ability Blade Flash is both AoE and unmissable (and two hit)! Very useful for this battle!

RMs:

Once again, very standard. The only thing I would really say is that RES reducing RMs are discouraged due to Necrophobe's heavy magical AoE attacks throughout the battle.

Remember to remove your "ability spring" RMs (Concentration, Moon's Grace etc.). They literally do nothing in battles with one level besides wasting a RM slot on your characters.

Recommended Team:

Mage and Mixed teams are the most recommended. Do note that Mage teams suffer from more damage (due to counters), while teams with physical characters might get RNG trolled with Flash!

Basic Battle Strategies:

This battle is divided into 2 simple phases, Barrier and then Necrophobe himself. I recommend killing the barriers as fast as possible as their massive damage rate can easily overwhelm you. Necrophobe himself is yet another battle of attrition. Kill him with fire (or any other element besides Dark). Necrophobe hurts but can be defeated relatively fast, so just rush him down before he rushes you down :P

Good luck! がんばろう!

Final Thoughts:

This battle is about as difficult as Rubicante. Both are pretty much glass cannons focused on blasting you with magical attacks very quickly. Necrophobe, however, requires AoE damage for smash down his barriers (unless you want to kill each of them individually, which is HIGHLY unrecommended). On the flip side, Necrophobe himself is weak to nearly everything, and his HP bar will deplete like wildfire if you prepare correctly.

I would like to thank u/fattybomchacha for all the information on Necrophobe's stats and movepool! Be sure to check kongbakpao's website for guides on all events! :D
