I Should Have Studied Semiotics
I'm looking for feedback especially for the second stanza; I'm having trouble making it flow better. Also, this is something I'm planning on performing out loud, so I'm toying with ideas for formatting (it's something I don't know a lot about). Any help is appreciated!
You lumber through my dreams like Paul Bunyon
(I’m not sure who Babe the Blue Ox is here,
but I wish there was a gentle side
to the way you keep me dangling like that day
we climbed rock walls together).
I worked 80 hours a week,
and twice that on you.
I only received an internship,
But I know you could have paid me well.
I thought then your love was worth (the Taj Mahal,
and all of the oil under the sea floor,
and) way too much of my time.
There is a nice homeless lady who's always at the gas station
and I wish your presence in my head
could be like that-
(ambivalent,
keeping to itself,
or at least) just fucking quiet.
You always liked that I wore scarves,
and I wish you could feel more like a shirt to me
that I could forget I’m wearing
or stop feeling throughout the day.
I wish I could find some uninspired artist and
give them all of these shitty feelings.
I’d buy a plane ticket,
but I know at the end I still have to claim my baggage.
Disney and cartoons and so many movies say I should
be careful what I wish for, but
I wish I had been careful what I worked for.
