Caught using a fake ID, never been in trouble before and hoping to get expunged through diversion program.

I was caught trying to use a fake ID to purchase alcohol. I've never been in trouble for anything before and this was only my second time ever attempting to use the ID. I was given a citation with a court date and I have no idea where to begin with anything. I'm a college student here in Arizona and I try my best to avoid any and all trouble. I have never been drunk once in college and I don't go to any parties. I stay in the room and spend my time playing xbox or watching movies by myself while my roommates go to their frat parties and smoke and drink. I went to a catholic high school and I intend to join the Uniter States Navy after college but I'm now worried that this with interfere. The only reason I was even trying to purchase the alcohol was because a friend from back home came out to visit and wanted to kick back and drink some beer while playing xbox or something. Will any of this make a difference at my court appearance? Do I need a lawyer? The cop told me that sometimes the judge will opt to send the person through a diversion program which will wipe the record clean. How to I go about getting into this? I was entirely respectful when I was receiving the ticket only saying yes sir or no sir. This has been the worst year of my life here at college and my goal is to just put all of this behind me and take an online semester back home or maybe just drop out entirely. Thanks for any help
