No chemistry or unrealistic expectations?

So to cut things short I'm 18, finally came out to some friends a couple of months ago, and was asked out on a date at the beginning of this month. So me and this guy went out on four dates, and kissed on the second one. The problem is, even though I like him and he really is a nice and funny guy, he isn't exactly my perfect type, which is fine because I realize that I have to be realistic about my chances and dating guys that are in my league... I guess it doesn't help that both of us are fresh out of the closet and have no experience, so the kissing isn't that great yet... Kind of messy and short, and I don't feel what a lot of people describe they feel when they kiss the person they like.

Now, my question is, since I know from various sources that he's "crazy about me" (quote from a couple of friends), what should I do? Should I keep dating him and see if we develop a good relationship and I find him more attractive? Or what? I fear that there's a desperate side of me who realizes how small the gay scene is in my country (extremely homophobic, absolutely no chance of PDA yada yada), and I fear not being able to find an actual crush. A friend of mine once said that life isn't what it's made out to be, that mutual attractions rarely happen and that dating itself is a little overrated, but I honestly have no idea what to think anymore. A part of me also doesn't want to lead this guy on if he really is crazy about me and I'm dating him only because I think he's cute and is a good person...

Thanks !
