What is the music when someone gets paranoid (plucked strings?) and where was it first used?

When a character starts to feel paranoid or lose their mind, there's usually some sort of plucked strings (or maybe dropped water) sound. I can't think of a good example because I haven't been able to find out what it's called! Though it's used in things like the X Files frequently.
