Thing is, the mediterranean way of being touchy-feely all the time can be quite strange if you aren't used to it. I'm a man and I remember being in Italy and a girl I just met put her hand high on my thigh, almost on my crotch, while she talked to me about her boyfriend. When you are sensitive to these issues, it's easy to be very confused about this kind of body language.
