Why don't more scholastic A-level indoor groups simply purchase programs from older shows? Why is there such a demand for new material especially among lower level groups?
Hello all,
I posted the below question in a different forum and received a thoughtful response--though only one response--and thought I would post on reddit to see if I could get more opinions on this:
I have been involved with a few percussion groups* in various circuits across the country, and am somewhat surprised at the constant emphasis on and demand for new music and drill arrangements. I suppose it would be highly discouraged for a Music City Mystique or an Ayala High School to recycle an old program, but is anyone surprised that more scholastic A-level groups that only compete regionally don't simply borrow from other shows for cost-saving purposes (with appropriate permission)?
I certainly don't mean to take away from my colleagues who are involved in the music-arranging game. (There are so many programs seeking new material these days that if any programs chose to recycle shows I doubt it would matter.)
*My background is in marching percussion but this comment applies equally to all aspects of marching band/indoor ensembles, including field shows and winter guard.
