Feel Like I've Hit Rock Bottom. Any Advice?
Hi r/AskGayBros,
I've been living with my folks for about 5 years now. I've had jobs on and off during and after college, but nothing that's stuck. I persist in this mindset that as long as I have the right connections, I'll be fine.
That assumption really hasn't shown itself as realistic.
I got lucky a few weeks ago. A friend of mine told me about a paid internship at her firm, got me an interview, and soon after told me I got the internship. But, today, while she was at her parents' house, I grilled her on whether the opportunity was legit after finding the firm had no website, and then stopped after realizing I'd stressed her out. And she said so, and told me I was being unprofessional, and that she'd talk to me tomorrow about that and the job.
I think I disrespected her emotionally (after she told me being at her parents house was stressful), and I feel like a selfish asshole for doing that. I think that the running train of experiences I've had since moving back home (feeling undervalued at work in storefront environments, getting mad at my parents for talking to me in specific ways when without them I'd probably be homeless and eroding those relationships, and lashing out when I feel the slightest twang of worry) indicates to me a general disposition where I'm wearing my emotions on my sleeve, expecting other people not to take offense when I seem needy as an obvious consequence of doing this, and then feeling negatively, blaming others internally, and eroding relationships and opportunities because of this.
I want to change. I feel that I've somehow internalized the belief that because I'm gay and an active Democrat/liberal I'm entitled to better treatment and always-politically correct interactions with people. I feel that I'm not exercising full control over myself, my carriage, and my emotions. My father may not have been around much when I was younger, but I believe it's never too late to change and improve.
I'm going to do my part by doing my own research, talking to friends and family and asking them if they get this impression from me, and so on. But, I also would be gratified to get input from the good people on this subreddit, too. The more input I get, the better conclusions I think I'll be able to draw about how to move forward behaviorally and mentally going forward (yes, I have a therapist, but that's only 1 data point, again).
I hope to hear feedback from anyone who's willing to give it, and give gratitude in advance for anyone who does.
