How to fly with a cat?

I will be taking my cat on a flight with me that will also have a layover, so it will be an all day process. I'm worried about the stress it will cause him, and also how I will feed/water him and what to do about a litter box.

Does anyone here have any experience flying with a pet? How can I make this as easy as possible?
