1978 Ford Courier

I'm looking to get into auto mechanics myself (nothing serious, I'd just like to be able to handle car repairs and upgrading myself) and found a 1978 Ford Courier online - new carb, cleaned gas tank, 4-speed 1.81 Mazda engine, replaced gas cap. The seller says that it suffers from vaporlock and the most likely source is the gas lines needing to be replaced. So, my question, is $1000 a fair price and is replacing the gas line an easy enough job for someone just jumping into home car repair?

Thanks in advance
