Looking for help planting a small garden in Va, USA

Hey all. I hope this is the right place for this. I am wanting to start a small garden this year and am looking for advice. Because I am renting, I have been informed that is has to be "above ground" (meaning I can't tear up the ground for it). I'm only wanting a few things, but I'm unsure, firstly, what I would be able to grow "above ground", and secondly how to do it. Any advice is greatly appreciate. Thanks!
