[Taxes] Girlfriend owes ~$1000 dollars to IRS

My girlfriend is a college student. Her parents claim her as a dependent. She made ~600 dollars from her school for the call center but then did a summer internship for $4,800 that they did a 1099 MISC for. Is there anyway to lessen her tax burden? I seems weird to me that as a college student she should have to pay that much when she didn't recieve that much income.
