Corrupted SD card recovery

Hey, so my girlfriend and I have been on vacation in Florida for the past week. We have taken many pictures and this being our first time in Florida, many of these photos are precious to her. Well today we went to a wildlife zoo and she didn't know she went over the maximum storage amount. Her card can hold 800 pictures and now it suddenly only contains 34 pictures of a damn yawning hippo. Is there anything I can do to recover these pictures? Will an SD card recovery program work? Please help!
