Quitting a job without another one lined up. Reasonable idea?

Posting this here because I really vibe with the mindset of this community. I apologize if this isn't appropriate.

I've spent the last two years or so working as a consultant in a fairly specialized field, a field which I've realized I have no interest in pursuing a career in. Overcoming apathy has always been a struggle for me, but last week I was trying to get a project done when I suddenly and completely stopped giving a shit. Like not even being able to read more than a sentence of important documents. Based on some research, it’s textbook burnout. This job is destroying my happiness and my ambition.

Over the past year or so I’ve gotten serious about self-improvement. I’m nowhere near where I need to be, but I’ve grabbed the low-hanging fruit by overcoming addiction and exercising and meditating daily. Setting goals and accomplishing them has made it impossible to justify expending my valuable effort on work when it may get me some bullshit raise 6 months in the future when I can instead be doing things that are guaranteed to yield me results, like lifting or practicing programming.

Obviously the conventional wisdom is that you absolutely should not quit a job unless you have something better lined up, which I completely understand. But I just can no longer justify spending 6-8 hours of my day doing boring work in a field that I can't advance in without a PhD and I’m beginning to worry about protecting my professional reputation from the potential consequences of the half-assed work I’ve been producing lately.

I’ve discussed it with a couple of friends in the industry and I’m very close to being able to change careers into software development. My plan would be to basically work full-time on some projects for my Github and apply to jobs. I’m 100% sure that I have the drive to apply myself to these tasks, especially if I force my hand by quitting my job.

No regular paycheck would be tough, but I have enough money saved up to sustain my current lifestyle for approximately eight months. As much as I don’t want to dip into my savings, I’m so tempted now to walk away and find work that adds some kind of value to my life other than a salary. I live in a major city, I’m still fairly young at 26 (no serious relationships, no kids (lol)), I have a degree from a well-respected school (currently working on my master’s), I have fairly marketable skills, and (in a worst-case scenario) there’s a basement at my parents’ house to move back into.

I'm unhappy and I need to make a change. I have a decent amount going for me right now, and from my vantage point it's obvious that my current job is the limiting factor in my life...but without the money it pays me, money would become the limiting factor. I'm confident I could find another job before I go broke, but it's a big decision and risky. Is betting on myself really that bad of an idea?
