Is Serial Experiments Lain hard to watch?

I have not watched Serial Experiments Lain, but from what I've heard, it's pretty trip. I just get the feeling that it's difficult to watch and is super deep and philosophical and I'm honestly a little intimidated to watch it. Can somebody who has watched it tell me if it's really like that?
