PhD in American Studies

I'm new here but was hoping for some feedback. I have two bachelor degrees in Political Science and English. I willhave a Master's in English by May.

I have been looking at PhD programs in American Studies snd some of them look really awesome (Kansas, Bowling Green, and Hawaii along with others).

But I was wondering if anyone coulr help me with some information on what PhDs in this field are preceived to be? Do they actually find work in academia? I don't want to throw 5-6 years into a field and have it all wasted.
