Tips on removing scratches from painted lacquer?

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this falls under the "home improvement" category but I'm not sure where else to post. We recently bought a brand new gray painted buffet unit. Unfortunately, we accidentally put something with a sharp edge on top of it, resulting in a few pretty noticeable scratches. On the advice of someone at the hardware store, we used some rubbing compound on it. However, not only did that barely affect the scratches, it also dulled the finish. You can see the scratches in their current state and the buffet here: http://imgur.com/a/E9pfv.

I've searched the internet high and low but have found very little consistent advice on this. Could someone please advise if this is something we can fix ourselves, and if so, how?

Not sure that it matters but we are in the DC area.

Thanks!
