Teacher can't admit he's wrong? I'll show him...
First time poster on this subreddit or any actually-Sorry if formatting or anything isn't up to par, lemme know if there is anything dire I should change or whatever.
So, this happened on Friday in my chemistry class (I'm in grade 11 and just moved to this small town in the country-which is already a bad sign as far as science teachers i know) when we were taking up the answers to our homework questions.
One of the questions was talking about John Dalton and his 4 rules or whatever you want to call them, the question being which one of the rules is no longer correct. Obviously, the first one is incorrect (the first rule claims that atoms are indivisible, and anyone who knows anything about chemistry knows this is not true), so that was my answer. However, my teacher had the second rule up instead. (the second rule was also revised slightly as time passed, however it is largely still valid other than the minor change involving different isotopes of elements) I, being the good student that I try to be, raise my hand and ask for an explanation as to why it is the second one and not the first. My teacher goes on this long tangent where he goes into detail about all 4 rules, asks me to explain why i think the first one is incorrect, which i do, and he says that I'm right and if this was a test and I explained my answer like I did that he couldn't mark it wrong. This is all fine with me for now. However, after he says something like ". . . and that is a perfectly logical way of answering this, however, you're wrong. . ." my patience for my teacher begins to run thin.
It's at this point that I once again raise my hand and ask him how I could possibly be wrong (this is especially annoying because if anyone in my class other than I had flipped the page of the textbook they would have seen even the textbook agree with me, not to mention that because I don't like wasting time or looking like an idiot-before I even brought this up with the teacher I had googled it and checked various websites to make sure I was right). My teacher says that the only way we can divide atoms is through nuclear stuff and that that isn't in chemistry... That statement just tells me that there is no hope for the situation so rather than call his attention to the entire internet that agrees with me, his own textbook, or anything else I decide it is better for the class (as its already been 10 mins of just debate basically) that i just let it go and allow the class to continue. About 20 mins later, as my teacher is talking about one of the other questions we did, he says in passing something along the lines of "and since we know Dalton's first rule. . ." I basically cry on the inside.
Now for the revenge-Since I am in the country and there aren't very many scientifically interested students here, it basically comes down to like 2 or three people to answer all of the teacher's questions to the class. I am one of those people, and my girlfriend is one of the others, and one of the others is one of my good friends. I've decided we will not raise our hands to answer any of his questions right away anymore, as he deserves EVERY SINGLE AWKWARD MOMENT of waiting for someone to answer that we can possibly give him.
tl;dr: My teacher was incorrect, i try to correct him, he says I'm wrong and continues teaching the class incorrect facts-now my friends and I are not raising our hands to answer questions anymore so he will have to deal with awkward silence for the rest of the semester instead of answered questions.
