Record Industry "Windowing"
Just read this article on RollingStone.com
To my mind, this is just a continuation of the larger strategy where labels, major services, and consolidated radio focus on classic songs and a VERY limited group of new songs/albums.
It gets to where the basic music consumer starts to believe that the 20-30 albums or songs the industry supports constitutes the ONLY new music that exists. It is why most people feel there is "no good music anymore."
At the same time, hundreds and thousands of bands put out content on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and through Independent Labels. The problem, "Windowing" is closing the imaginations of more and more consumers.
Not sure what the answer is, but I suspect is more effectively using social outlets to counteract what is becoming a monopoly on ears. I, just off the top of my head, put out a list of 40 albums from the last two years that were great (but got no real traction).
You can check out the list on my blog.
I am probably nuts, what do you folks think?
