Eng grad searching for 7 months now, not sure where to go from here

So first of all, I'm a 2013 graduate from chemical engineering with a few co-op terms in varied fields. After graduating, I worked abroad for 2 years consulting in process safety and risk (clients predominantly in oil and gas) and quit last year to move back to Canada.

I guess it's partially been bad timing given the bad state of the oil industry lately, but I've been looking for jobs for 7 months now with no end in sight. Oil is just not hiring anymore, I've applied to manufacturing, pharma, enviromental consulting, all sorts of logistics/business/supply chain/financial analyst positions. I've had some responses last year but basically no luck since the new years. I think the market might be super competitive right now due to the large number of experienced engineers laid off and searching.

I don't really need job searching advice like networking, tailor your resume, whatever. The point is, it's a real possibility I won't have more luck going forward and I have a growing employment gap that I'm worried about.

I could broaden my search but I'm not sure into what. I've been avoiding administration, technician types of jobs so far because I'm afraid it may stall out my career. I've been thinking about going back to school but I'm not sure for what. Been considering an MBA or something in statistics but I'm afraid doing so will kick me out of engineering into another field where I still don't have competitive advantages. I'm not sure what my options are now, I'm out of ideas on what I can do to firmly increase my chances.

What other fields can I look into? What training or education can I get? What can I do if my employment gap gets too big?
