Anyone else find the way Ranked points work to be absolutely insane? flair:V
To explain from the start, every time you win or lose a match you gain or lose points. Obviously. I'm getting there.
The issue comes in when you are playing around the "breakpoints". These are pre-determined server-side values which determine how many points you gain or lose.
The first one that is really obvious to anyone stuck around that rank: 1000. 2000 is the next I believe. This is how it works if you are around 1000 (+-400 or so):
- If you are above 1000 and play someone above 1000, both of you gain or lose the same amount. This is normal.
- If you are below 1000 and play someone below 1000, both of you gain or lose the same amount. This is normal.
- If you are above 1000 and play someone UNDER 1000, you get royally screwed. If you win you gain half (35 or less), but if you LOSE you lose more (-66 to -100).
- If you are below 1000 and play someone ABOVE 1000. Congrats! You get a huge gain if you win and lose almost nothing if you lose. (as low as 25 points for a loss, yet the higher person can lose up to 80. I have lost 98 before from 1 game with only 400 point spread in LP)
This means for every person you play under a 'breakpoint', you are at a MASSIVE DISADVANTAGE as far as the points go. Losing is super punishing while winning barely gets you anywhere. It's a completely insane system and is unlike anything I have ever played before.
The result of this system is that there are huge clumps of people around the breakpoints. Tens of thousands of people are clumped around 1000 instead of being evenly spread out. This means the matchmaking is wildly inaccurate and can pair really good people with really bad people if the good player loses once or twice unluckily. Suddenly they lose 200 points and have to slog back up getting 25-35 points for each win.
In MOST games, this not how it is done. Usually the difference between your ratings smoothly determines how many points you gain or lose. Not in SF5. It's 100% just reliant on the breakpoints and how many of them you are away from your opponent. If you get matched up with someone who is 2k+ and you are at 800? Go wild! If you win you get 110+ and they can lose up to 160. You lose? They gain 15 and you lose 10.
A+ Capcom. A+
EDIT: And clearly I didn't know how flair works until after I submitted it. Lack of experience. Bleh. If a mod wants to change it, please do.
