I have some extra money, how do I prepare for my sons future?

Hey all, I'm 30 and just became debt free. I have a 3yo son and 3k set aside for him. I would also like to make monthly contributions to the effort. Is the 529 plan the way to go or are there better options? We'll be in Texas if that matters.
