As a returning player, should I make a new account ?

I played during initial launch of the game where you were forced to choose between limited number of heroes.

I am told that current version lets you choose any hero you want. Would I miss anything if I kept playing on this account ? Current hero I am stuck with I have little interest in. I would like to have unlock as many characters as possible.
