Sonos Play 5 with Playbar

I was given 2 play 5s (2nd gen) by my in laws. They are phenomenal and I absolutely love them. The numerous positive reviews I have read don't do them justice.

My question is that I would like to upgrade my home entertainment audio and I'm thinking about getting a Playbar. I will keep the 2 Play 5s so returning them is not an option. All the online Sonos materials say when producing 5.1 use 2 Play 1s or Play 3s. Has anyone paired the Play 5s with the Playbar? How does it sound? Is this overkill? Is a sub needed? (I prefer not to buy their sub at this time for budget reasons.)
