Starting as a DJ: Play the music I love or cater for the audience?
Hi, so me and a mate are around 17 and starting as DJs. I've been into house music for years (MK, Endor, Chris Lorenzo, Cause & Effect, Disclosure, Dusky. I can name so many more!), and the parties that I go to only have things like Grime, Rap and Chart music playing, and not many people dance but whenever a house tune comes on people start to dance! So we've invested a bit in a simple set up to play parties, and to be honest i'm not in it for the money but more for the enjoyment of DJing We've already played a nye party which went alright and hopefully once we turn 18 we could start to play clubs. Me and my friend have another party coming up this saturday, and i keep on getting this little feeling that the crowd just wont be into the House music that I love because they're so used to something else. We have rap, grime, jungle and popular music in out library just incase, but I just wanted some professional opinions from you guys on whether it would be better to play it safe and play the same old tunes or mix the music that i'm passionate about and better at mixing?
Any advice at all would be appreciated, this is our soundlcoud page if you want to hear a mix?https://soundcloud.com/dukeanddiamond
EDIT: So jus finished the gig and it went really well. I found that playing a mix of my songs and popular songs went down a treat and got everyone dancing!
