PVE needs a playlist mode, immersion be damned
The Dark Zone gets a lot of attention, and rightly so, but let's discuss PVE for a moment...
While there will presumably be an End Game feature like Raids or Challenge Mode Difficulty or whatever, and that's great, what I'm concerned about is the less 'extreme' spectrum of the PVE content.
Replaying missions on Hard with a matchmaking group is a lot of fun. It's somewhat rewarding, but also kind of brainless. Regardless - it's fun. But what is not fun is having to abandon a group at the end of every mission and going back to the mission to matchmake for the mission again.
I can respect that the developers are pursuing an immersive experience with emergent gameplay coming out of joining groups, and this is absolutely true in the Dark Zone. But in PVE this is just obnoxious. The result of every matchmaking is half the players running back to the BOO and half the players abandoning the group.
Furthermore, what I suspect will happen is that only the final mission will be replayed by a populated group.
Therefore, what this game needs is a mission playlist. Let me join a group of players interested in playing some missions and cycle through them, at some set difficulty. What I imagine would be akin to Destiny's Strike Playlists. Having a playlist would help ensure that there is more effective 'pseudo-end-game' content (rather than just the ultimate missions), and facilitate in matchmaking play.
Without this feature, I fear that the PVE content will quickly die with the exception of whatever "end game" content, ala Raids, are in the plan. I do not think that "Challenge Mode" missions will be sufficient without a playlist behind them.
