Where is a good place to start getting into music

I'm 17 but don't know the lyrics to any songs, don't really know any artists/bands, and I rarely listen to music (my media has been mainly tv/movies). I want to get more into music but don't know where to start.

Basically I have listed to popular music/today's hits that are on the radio when I'm in the car, but I have no idea what genre(s) I like.

Is there a good way to find this out? I don't want to put off a genre just because I didn't like one song.
