I just got a Lilac Bush - not sure what to do with it!

I live in SoCal and just bought a Lilac Bush. I didn't get to ask for many suggestions from the garden center since they were fairly busy.

I am wondering a few things:

  • Will it be okay in a container?
  • I was recommended morning sun, however I don't have any great options for that. I could do morning filtered light with afternoon/evening full sun? It gets quite warm though...
  • Fertilizer??
  • Other suggestions/tips/tricks/etc

The only time I had a lilac was an enormous, 10+ year old one at my parents house in the midwest. Literally the only thing I did with it was prune dead branches in spring and cut off the seed pods after blooming, so I'm not sure how to care for a new baby one (especially in this climate!) Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give!
