Have we reached a point where The Don needs to be more responsible about what he says?

Very early in the primary season I supported what Trump was doing, but figured that at some point he would go too far and the floor would fall out from under his campaign. You know, the whole "...says nervous man for the seventh time this year" meme. Time and time again he proved me wrong. Ultra high energy respect for the man, as it seems he is essentially untouchable and any negative press just feeds into his campaign.

However, that was a necessary strategy for a complete outsider who only had a puncher's chance to get the nomination. There was no way he was going to get where he is now without essentially playing the media against itself and publicizing his campaign for him.

This was a strategy to pull off a yuge upset, and he executed it perfectly, but is it necessary any longer? He is now essentially the frontrunner, and short of a Cruz/Rubio alliance and consolidation of voters under one of them, there is really no scenario where Trump doesn't win the nom...

...unless, like the nervous man has predicted seven times this year, he unintentionally does something to end his own campaign. And we shouldn't pretend that this couldn't ever happen. Don't forget Ross Perot. Think about this last week. The Apple thing made him look at best overprotective, and at worst foolish, and it's likely that his staffers have told him not to press it any more. The Pope thing, while a win, was a huge risk and could've turned out very badly. If I were a Cruz or Rubio staffer right now, I would be doing everything I could to put plants in every audience to lure the attack dog into a trap.

The way I see it, he should take fewer chances, push the boundaries less, until he gets the nomination. He needs to act like a frontrunner and consolidate voters from candidates that drop out. I wince every time I see him in the headlines for something controversial, because every time could be that time. To be honest, Trump's team is probably thanking their lucky stars the media didn't bite harder on this.

Anyone else feel this way?
