Need solo traveling friend making tips.

I'm slated to go to Thailand from March 5 to April 3. I'm nervous and excited, but I recently became more nervous and excited than I expected to be. My friend who was supposed to go with me bailed. Now I'm going on this adventure alone, and it's frightening. I've rarely left my home state (US) and never even left the country. I'm not the best at making friends either. I tend to be shy at first when I meet new people. How do you guys go about making friends in foreign lands? Advice from fellow shy people is greatly appreciated, but I'd like to hear from everyone with input.
