How quickly can I learn to become a software developer in San Francisco
Thank you for reading.
My dream is to get a job as a software developer in San Francisco. I have a masters in Physics and have spent the last 6 months working in a business support role. It's not bad and I've learned a lot about business, but its not what I want to do at all.
I have some small experience in Android app development from myself playing around and watching treehouse tutorials. I haven't made a full app yet, but I need to. I am just struggling to find time and inspiration.
My main languages are C++ and Python, but use them almost entirely for data analysis and simulation, physics things, but not great development projects.
I am based in the UK, but with dual citizenship and family in the bay area so there is no problem regarding location or work eligibility.
I am planning on moving to the bay area around November, and want to ideally find work, no matter how entry level, in the right sector, for around the new year. From now I want to make sure my time is rigorously planned and I am not wasting it in the run up to the move.
Do you think it's possible to learn enough in the coming 10 months or so to actually get good enough to get a low level development job?
Since I am also in a relatively inexperienced position, I have the luxury of picking one thing and focusing on that, what do you think a good way of spending my time would be. I know the language really depends on what you want to do so if there isn't something that you guys scream "Start learning this while you can!" I will just focus on Python, C++, and Java (probably in that order).
I am quite interested in apps, but haven't had enough exposure to really know if that's what I want to get into, but right now I'm interested and learning off that momentum.
Finally, is there anyone else currently in, or has ever been in, a similar situation and can share some tips with me? It would be great to have someone to talk to about what I'm getting myself in to because, as many blogs as I can read and podcasts I can listen to, I still feel like I'm shooting in the dark a little bit right now.
What are some good ways of learning, what resources are there online to help me stay motivated, and use my time as wisely as possible.
My main question is: is 10 months or so actually a realistic time to go from novice programmer, to working in the field, no matter how junior a role.
Thank you for reading this long question.
