[NY] My girlfriend was never paid for the training that she attended

My girlfriend does not have a Reddit account and asked me to post this here. She is a college student that was looking for a part-time job when she got into this situation:

“In August of 2015, I got hired as a receptionist in a Spa. It pays $9 an hour for training and $12 base with commission. The job required online training and three days of hands-on training. I completed my first day of hands-on training a week after my interview, as well as 4 hours of online training. The following day after my first day of training, I received a call from them that they are going to go with someone else that had more experience and will email me a check for the 5 hours I spent training there. I never received my check. I emailed their manager whom had previously been quickly responsive, but received no response. I sent a second email which showed me an error saying that the email failed. After neglecting the situation for a while, I thought of what happened and felt much wronged. I emailed the manager about the situation without coming out with any rash conclusions and he responded quickly that he will look into it on a following day. I was told from him that I will receive my check after I email him my address. It has been 3 weeks since our email conversation took place and I have yet to receive the check. A couple of days ago I called the Spa and asked for him but was told that he was not there and to leave a message. I left a message to call me back and my name and that it is about a payment. I was never called back. I am wondering about my rights in this situation and where I go from here.”
